Louisiana Tech, or LA Tech for short, was established during the Second Industrial Revolution, in 1894, by the General Assembly of Louisiana, as The Industrial Institute and College of Louisiana, having the original mission to educate students in practical industries for the purpose of developing an industrial economy. In 1889, the institution was renamed Louisiana Industrial Institute, in 1921 being renamed, again, as Louisiana Polytechnic Institute, finally adopting its current name in 1970, to better reflect its new status as a research university.

According to Washington Monthly, Louisiana Tech is the 1st best public university in Louisiana, also being named the 1st school with best out-of-state costs, by Kiplinger’s Magazine.
The athletic teams from LA Tech are known as the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs and Lady Techsters, who compete in Division I of NCAA sports, (since 2001, LA Tech being a member of the Western Athletic Conference), in various sports, including in baseball, basketball, football, cross country, golf and tennis.
